Breakthrough to Nursing: Mary Ann Portwood

A huge thank-you to all the students and faculty members that attended the GANS conference this month in Columbus, Georgia. Those students are: Tara Babb, Karrie Stewart, Julie German, Mary Ann Portwood, Adrienne Johnson, Amy Wacha, and Lisa Evans.  Thanks to Mrs. Belinda Shaw for coming out and supporting Gordon College. The students had nothing but good things to say about the conference, many said it was a great learning experience. Lisa Evans said, “It was a great experience, and I definitely recommend that students plan to attend next year.  The conference is an opportunity to enhance your learning.  The classes teach helpful techniques to remember what you learn.  It was also a great opportunity to network with other nursing students all over the state of Georgia and with Gordon's nursing students.” Many other students had positive things to say.” Thanks to all those students and faculty that attended the conference and helping reflect Gordon College Nursing School in a professional way.

GCANS is an acronym for Gordon College Association of Nursing students. We are a school chapter of GANS, the Georgia Association of Nursing Students, which is a constituent of National Student Nurses Association, Inc. We represent nursing students, and advocate for and contribute to advances in nursing education and help to understand the role as a professional nurse. The benefits of staying active in GCANS are uncountable. Some benefits that could help you as a nurse include: learning professionalism, learning leadership skills, learning how to locate needed sources, enhancing your career, becoming a voice on the local state and national level, and networking with other students. For instance, in 1901 you focus a lot of fluid and electrolytes, GCANS officers are there to formulate a network to gear your studies related to covered topics. In 1902 you study three specialties, which is touched on at these conventions. Same goes with 2903 and 2904. Another organization, NSNA (National Student Nurses’ Association), has two conferences per year. NSNA is holding its 57th annual convention in March. Although details are not available at this time, Gordon College will pay for up to 10 participants will go. Take into consideration that this could really help in your studies as well as meet and network with new people, no matter what semester you’re in.

**Support GCANS by buying a GCANS t-shirt! Quantities are limited and going fast. Please e-mail cw300808@gdn.edu or jp021117@gdn.edu if you’re interested. $8 per shirt! **

**Be looking for the upcoming blood drive next January, this will be organized by Tamisha Burse. Volunteers needed for the blood drive committee. Please contact Tamisha at tb181195@gdn.edu**

**Know about your graduating class account balance, this is available for anyone to obtain. This money is raised by your class, for your class and for your pinning ceremony. Take into consideration volunteering for fundraisers.**

**GCANS meetings will be held once a month for members. Please be looking for updated GCANS calendars in January for meetings and special dates.**

**Again, congrats in completing another semester in your career path. Remember the holidays are all about Family, Friends, and fun… so as a previous professor would say, “You have worked hard, take this time and enjoy your few weeks of freedom.” –Ms. Kucher!**
